Seems like a very basic addition to the mirrorless line but not enough to make me move from my existing crop frame DSLRs.

This new body doesn't seem to be intended for existing dSLR crop body users. The R7 or R10 would be more what you would be looking at, John. This is a beginner's camera.

It's soooo basic that the rear screen is fixed (not flippy) and has no touch capability.

At the age of 80, I don’t buy green bananas, nor am I likely to go mirrorless in any form. I’m still quite happy with a 90D and a 60D. I actually prefer the 60D because of its “heft” as compared to the 90D.

Canon obviously believes there's still a "low end" camera market, and they're going after it aggressively and moving would-be M buyers to RF.

A consumer camera buyer (i.e., not somebody who hangs out in online equipment forums), will likely never notice or care about the minor feature differences between the R50 and R100. And the $200 price difference from the R50 is huge, making the RF line accessible to an entire market of buyers who were excluded before.

Bravo, Canon!

Just a big R equivalent of the M100? They gave us the R equivalent of the M50, and maybe now the M100.

I think it's just a sign that Canon will eventually replicate its entire line with mirrorless cameras. They started at the middle to high end (R5, R3, R6) and have gradually been working their way down. Their entry level DSLRs have always been a huge success in the shrinking camera market. Very smart, IMHO, for them to gradually open that market to mirrorless, which is clearly the future. Now they have a beginner's mirrorless camera, and if they produce (or license) enough RF-S lenses, I predict this will be a big success.

Okay Canon, now you've got plenty of APS-C mirrorless R-series cameras... Now you desperately need RF-S lenses for them!

Three "kit" lenses is not enough! Especially since there's a lot of "overlap": RF-S 18-45mm, RF-S 18-150mm, RF-S 55-200mm.

You need one or more ultrawides.... RF-S 11-22mm, RF-S 22mm f/2. You need a more premium "walk-around" zoom... RF-S 17-55mm f/2..8 or RF-S 15-85mm. Maybe a compact macro lens too... 60mm?

Don't make the same mistake you did with the M-series cameras, failing to support the R-series APS-C models with a healthy selection of lenses.

Too bad you stopped 3rd party manufacturers from offering autofocus lenses. If you had worked with them instead, there would already be a reasonably good selection of high quality primes for your new cameras: Sigma 16mm, 30mm, 56mm... Viltrox 13mm, 23mm, 33mm, 56mm.

I think this is a good move. A few months ago I would have told you that people don't buy cameras anymore, but I did something abnormal recently and I went near people. All I saw were people with low end rebels with 75-300s trying desperately to get pictures of their kids or friends walking across a stage . Even though I don't think that everyone of them will go out and buy one of these, some of them may get one for when their kids have kids for a trip or something. At the end of the Day it's great to have a cheap camera in the eco system, it brings in more people and that means more money for Canon and more money for canon means more money to dump into lens development..... Since they won't let anyone else develop lenses... Maybe now the will work on making Fast small pancakes so I can yeet this 18-45 f22 that came with my R50...

Third party lenses may be great for the consumer, but why would Canon want to let everyone cut into their market share? I admit, I don't have a business management background, but it seems logical that they would want to sell more of their own lenses. That being said, they should produce enough lenses to keep people happy.
