Hey, as title asks I’m wondering if the EF lens is worth replacing with the newer RF one?
In terms of lens usage, generally the RF 15-35 spends most of its time on my camera as I do interior photography for work.
The 28-70 f2 is my general walk about, events and go to lens for most uses outside of interior work.

I use the EF 85 1.2 ii for more artistic portraits. I do this occasional and isn’t an every day thing. When I use this lens I use it with official canon adapter.

What do you guys think? Is it worth jumping over giving my use case or is the older EF still good enough with an adapter?

Having shot both the EF 85L II and the RF 85L for quite a few years each, using both of them for portraits and some landscape work, I would say the RF85 is absolutely worth it.

With the RF85 I have never experienced the lateral chromatic aberrations that were always lurking around the corner with the EF. In addition, for optimal IQ you really had to stop down the EF to F/4 or F/5.6. The RF you can use straight from F/1.2, at any f-stop. The images are sharp from corner to corner, always, for what is in focus anyway. It also is quite a bit sharper than the old lens, and from corner to corner, again, at any f-stop.

Finally, it focuses fast, making it a lens for any occasion ....

When I switched from EF to RF in June 2019, I actually haven't looked back. I got the RF 85L two months later, traded in the EF, and have never missed it. I always thought the EF 85L was bees knees, but OMG, you have to see the results from the RF 85L to believe it.
BTW, the same holds true for the RF 50L vs the EF 50L F/1.2. I loved the EF version, but it just can't hold a candle to he RF one.

Anyway, the RF 85L looks sharper at F/1.2 than the EF 85L at F/3.5, and the transitions from OOF foreground and background are extremely smooth and pleasing., whereas the EF version was good at the OOF background, but slightly less so, although still being good, to the foregound. Also, the EF sometimes doubled up contours in the OOF background under certain conditions, which I have never experienced with the RF.

I have added two sample images, both shot at F/1.2. Artistic work portraits, actually ....
Both are jpegs SOOC, EOS R, nothing done to either, other than a resize.

HTH, kind regards, Wim

I can also echo Wimg. I had the EF 85 1.2 for about a year for wedding work, and I always had a strong hesitation to shoot at 1.2 because of the CA and also not feeling confident in the AF (granted, this was with the 5D3 and before Eye-detect/tracking). Used the RF 85 for a baptism ceremony and I was blown away. I can't think of any negative talking point. I'm now contemplating picking up this lens, but I'm going back and forth between the 85 and the new 135 f/1.8.

:)
Well, I do plan on getting the RF 135L at some time as well, I think you need both ;).

You do need more distance with 135 mm of course, and I have always like the FL ....

Kind regards, Wim

Any examples of the CA exhibited by the EF?

Cheers

Not the best exanple, as it was rather overcast, grey and dark, plus it was an old photo, with the 400D.

Under brighter light it gets a lot worse.

The top insert shows the bright green background longitudinal CA, the bottom part the purple or magenta foreground LoCA.

Despite this 'defect' I really loved this lens, but the RF-version does not have this at all, and is way sharper too.

HTH, kind regards, Wim

P.S.: I vaguely remember I had better examples of this CA, but I realized I actually deleted those images a long time ago. This one was taken as one of the 'duck photographs" you were supposed to take with a new lens, and it is the only reason I kept it ;-)a.
