I got an email about a month ago now, with a link (I think. Need to look at it again) about updating my 5d4.

I've never done this before. Is it very involved?

I'm at work so I don't know which version is in the camera right now..

Just find a patch cord, plug into my computer, open the link and let nature take its course?

No. There's instructions on how to do it on the 5D4 firmware page.

I'm curious, who sent the email? Canon? I've had near a dozen Canon cameras since the 300D and they have never sent me a firmware email. Just wondering who sent it.

Anyway, firmware can be downloaded HERE (external link).
If you download the firmware and extract it, there are detailed instruction. It's pretty easy though, copy the firmware into the root of a CF card, pop it into the camera and navigate the menus to the firmware update selection. The camera does the rest.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Firmware updates are easy. Download the file to a memory card, put the card in the camera and initiate the upgrade from the camera menus.

I got that upgrade notification about the 5Div. I was surprised since Canon hadn't released firmware for that camera for a long time and I figured the one I had would be the last one. I assumed the firmware was as mature as it was going to get.

I'm at v1.3.3 from June, 2021. That was the last update before this latest version.

Latest version does this, and this alone, and was released for 11 different Canon bodies:

Adds enhanced security for transferring captured images to image.canon. After July 2023, please update to this firmware version so that you will be able to send images to image.canon. If you do not update to this version, an error message will appear when sending images and the image will not be sent.

Figured I'd pass on this one. If you're not on 1.3.3, I'd upgrade at least to that. That was the last feature/bug release.

Got the email regarding this from BH Photo. It is an easy process. I plug my card into card reader and have it downloaded into that, then pull the card, insert into the camera and follow the menu.

I imagine this will be their last update for it.

I went ahead an did the update. As mentioned above, this is probably the last update this camera is going to get so might as well be current.

I noticed that there was a new version of DPP as well. Looks like Canon is going AI as well with their Neural network Image Processing Tool. I downloaded that one as well. Might as well check EOS Utility. :)

This is from USA.CANON.COM
This newest firmware update seems to be solely for improved image.canon security. It doesn't say "plus additional changes" as it always has before.

"Firmware Notice: EOS 5D Mark IV: Firmware Version 1.4.0

Firmware Version 1.4.0 incorporates the following enhancements:

Adds enhanced security for transferring captured images to image.canon.
After July 2023, please update to this firmware version so that you will be able to send images to image.canon.
If you do not update to this version, an error message will appear when sending images and the image will not be sent.

Firmware Version 1.4.0 is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.3.3 If the camera's firmware is already Version 1.4.0, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

Users manual in the WEB is updated accordingly. Please download the manual as well as the latest firmware. You can download it from the official WEB site."
