I have been debating whether or not to order the new RF 28mm f2.8 pancake lens. I like the focal length, but I was hoping Canon would make an f1.8 version like their 24mm and 35mm lenses.

I ordered one from B&H yesterday. It isn’t shipping for a few more days but on the DPReview forum some people have already gotten some. If reviews don’t start popping up by the time I get mine I’m happy to do some basic image quality tests for the forum.

That would be awesome! It seems like the perfect walk-around lens, especially for travel. I'm happy with my RF 16mm f2.8 and RF 35mm f1.8, but the 28mm would be the perfect focal length!

My lens shipped today and is scheduled to be delivered by Monday. I’m really hoping reviews will start popping up soon; I can’t believe there isn’t any from major YouTube channels or photography websites.

When it gets here I’ll do some testing and post them on here Tuesday night at the latest. I don’t have a test charts or anything like that but I have stucco walls which are good for judging sharpness as well as some distant and close objects to test sharpness at infinity and minimum focus distances. My tests definitely won’t be as good as a professional reviewer but should be enough to get a good idea of it’s image quality in various situations.

I ended up ordering one and it arrived yesterday. As advertised, it is small and lightweight. I have only taken a few test shots with it, but from what I have seen so far it performs well.

Got mine too and I'm quite happy with it! Sharpness looks really good and it's really only the far corners and edges that aren't perfect at f2.8. By f5.6 it looks perfect corner to corner. Close up sharpness is great too. I was worried it would be similar to the RF 50mm f1.8 where it gets soft and hazy up close but no, even at f2.8 at MFD it looks quite good.

Here are some quick sharpness tests. I want to do more where I can include corner detail; I'll probably do the same subject but with the camera tilted 45 degrees. To summarize, it's sharp even at f2.8. Click the link to see the full size on Flickr.

f2.8

Sharpness remains good at minimum focus distance. I wouldn't judge corner sharpness with these images because I can't be certain I was aligned perfectly with the wall.
