Recently had my gear stolen and am researching replacement. Had an R6 and will be replacing that one. Great camera for event shooting.

Had a 5DS for those sharpity sharp landsapes. Was wondering how the sensors compare between the 5DS and R5 with this in mind. One advantage to getting the R5 is I could replace my stolen lenses with RF models (24-70, 100 macro, 70-200) and not need the adaptor, but I loved working with those 5DS files!

I've not had the 5DS - but have the R5 - and the files are really good to work with - 45Mp is a good size - did a trip to Morocco at Easter and took 7500 shots and whilst most are just snap shots, some have come out special (IMHO!)

I've used neither model, but based on the fact the 5DS dates from the "era" around the 5D3, and the R5 is after/better than the 5D4, I'd assume the sensor on the R5 will be way better for landscape work.

Dynamic range at low ISO is much better (https://www.photonstophotos.net …OS%205DS,Canon%20EOS%20R5 (external link)) and I understand that visible sensor noise is qualitatively improved from around the 7D2 onwards. Certainly the 5D4 was a significant quality step over the 5D3, so I'd assume the R5 might be as big a step from the 5DS.

Camera, some lenses, too little time, too little talent

Thanks for the replies.

The 5DS sensor is a completely different animal from the 5D MK II, III, IV and is similar in resolution to the R5. I was hoping to get a comparison in dynamic range and low light performance.

Cheers

Though the 5DS sensor is completely different from the 5DII and 5DIII, the technology is not. With the 5DIV, the sensor technology was significantly improved and you see it in the R series cameras. As mentioned, the low ISO DR has improved and the quality of the noise. If your replacing, I would definitly replace with the newer tech.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

The link posted by sploo has a comparison of dynamic range. The R5 is better by two full stops at base ISO, but the two converge at higher ISOs.
