I have been away from photography for a while and I know things have changed, but, has Canon done away with their prime 300 f2.8 and their 500 f.4.0 lens???? I cannot find them anywhere... I always thought that their 300 f 2.8 lens was the sharpest lens in the industry..
\Thanks for any info.

Dave

Do you know anything about the change to RF (mirrorless) mount?

It's a bigger change than FD to EF.
All EF lenses can be used on an R camera but no RF lens can be used on an EF camera.

The last 300 was the 2.8L IS II, which I think has usually been out of stock recently but is still supported by Canon. I have seen refurbs available from Canon within the last year but currently there are none. In the transition to the RF mount they turned that into a $9500 100-300 zoom so there is at the moment no longer a 300 prime.

Looks like both the new and refurb 500s are out of stock. EF only.

About a year ago there was a rumor of a RF 300 f2.8. So far it looks like that rumor has fizzled out.

Although Canon did release the RF 100-300 f2.8. Might be worth considering if you have deep pockets.

I think that rumor turned into the 100-300. I don't see Canon launching a 300 now, or at least not any time soon. They would potentially piss off a lot of 100-300 buyers, and the price really wouldn't be much lower anyway. There was a video that Canon made about the development of the 100-300 and it gave me the impression that it is the new 300.

As for the 500, Canon has really filled out the RF lineup of 400/600/800 so I personally don't see a 500 coming but I'm definitely not tied into the latest developments. There's a 400/2.8 and a 600/4. I dunno, maybe a 500/4 could fit in there but also Canon could make it a 500/2.8 for $16,000.

Another lens to think about is the Canon RF 200-500 f4, which is still in the rumor stage.
Although Canon Rumors says the lens is confirmed.

I'm sure there are plenty of the Mark II versions for sale on eBay. Hey, maybe even check your local areas too. What about a happy medium, 400?
