I am going to upgrade my now nine and ten your old Mark III’s this year to the Mark IV’s before they are long gone. Paired with my EF lenses, why not Max Out on top?
I am a lover of the f/4 L IS all started with your 70-200 f/4 L IS Version 1. Bought mine in 2009 and used it extensively until the 70-200 f/2.8 L Mark II was released. Used the f/2.8 all the time until the return of a trip to Italy. Carrying two gripped Mark III’s paired with a 16-35 f/4 L IS a 70-200 f/2.8 L IS Mark II I need to reduce weight after pain in the lower back and elsewhere…. So I swapped out the 2.8 for my old trusty 70-200 f/4 L IS for a trip to Iceland. Ahhhhhh much better.
To this day my Greek Trilogy, the Canon 16-35 F/4 L IS, 24-70 f/4 L IS and 70-200 f/4 L IS, go over seas as my travel kit. While not “Light” it does allow this now 60 year old to enjoy the views pain free. If I could only take two, the 24-70 would stay behind as I know as it does pretty much in the hotel as the 16-35 and 70-200 are attached to each 5D Mark III.
I did upgrade my 70-200 f/4 L IS to the Mark II version. It is a real nice upgrade in terms of color and sharpness if you look at the same exact image to compare. But boy is the Version 1 still sooooo good. That is why it is still in my possession. A great lens no matter when manufactured. Paired with you Mark IV……… ahhhhhh Enjoy.
If you really want to lighten your load, instead of upgrading from 5D3's to 5D4's, you may want to consider moving to mirrorless. I did this, going from a 5D3, 7D2 and M50 mirrorless (for light weight travel) to a R6 M2 and R10. I also downsized some of my lenses: EF 50L to RF 50mm f/1.8, EF 100-400L II to RF 100-400, EF 16-35mm f/4 L to RF 16mm f/2.8. For an upcoming trip, I am down to a smaller Lowepro Flipside 300 (from the Flipside 400AW I used to carry), and am taking the R6 M2, R10, RF 24-105mm f/4 L, RF 100-400 and RF 16mm. That gives me a full frame equivalent focal range of 16mm - 640mm in a pretty light weight kit. On our last big trip to Iceland, I carried a 5D3, 7D2, M50, EF 24-105 f/4 L, 70-200 f/4 IS L + 1.4x TC, EF-M 11-22mm and EF-M 22mm f/2 pancake. I had to leave my preferred EF 100-400L II at home, as it was just too heavy (hence taking the 70-200 f/4 + TC).
Here's my bag for that upcoming trip:
1/60 • f/1.8 • ISO 200
