Just a couple of days back I subscribed to the photography package of Adobe that includes Lightroom, Lightroom Classic and Photoshop. I installed them on my desktop PC (Windows) and they work fine.

A question - In the CC window, there is an option to install Photoshop in a mobile device with a button that reads "Send Link".

How does PS work on iPhone 13 Pro? I read somewhere there is an app in Apple store "Adobe Photo Express". Is it the curbed down version of PS? Which one do you think I should install? How is the experience? Any inputs would help me decide if I should install or just keep using my PC.

I am a photography hobbyist. I may not be able to respond immediately due to time difference and the fact that I visit this forum once a day for an hour or so. But will respond whenever I see the response.

thanks..

Subscribing as I am interested to hear from others on using PS on a phone but my perception is that the phone screen is just too small and the inputting interface too imprecise to be of much use. I have CC as well but never really concidered using it on a phone.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Thanks @gjl711. Yes, I think so too. But just for cases where I am say away from my home for a few days, will it work for basic edits?

I have had the plan for many years. I have never installed Lightroom as I'm into cloud storage, yet. Lightroom or Lr is sometimes referred to as the cloudy version. While it on your desktop imported files are automatically sent to the cloud.

Lightroom Classic or LrC requires local file storage with an option to sync to the cloud. If you do it only sends Smart Previews which don't use any cloud storage space. Just a note. You can access those Smart Previews with a mobile app, edit them and those edits will sync back to LrC. This way you can access your files in the cloud just using LrC.

FYI. Adobe never meant for both Lr and LrC to be installed on the desktop. Someone once posted a basic explanation. Both want to be the boss. However people do it and it has something to do with syncing which I know nothing about. Just a heads up as you are new users.

Lr is less robust than LrC and that is because you can use it with the mobile app. I would guess any Photoshop or PS mobile app will not have the same features that the desktop version has.

If you can't get answers here this is a good site. They will answer any syncing questions as well.

If you are interested in this part. I wish I had known this in the first month. This is a pretty good video for those new to Adobe. Sometimes new users think their files are the catalogue. They aren't. The catalogue is just a database that keeps a record of your adjustments. The only reason for importing is so the catalogue can read the metadata and most importantly knows where your files/folders are located. That is how the DAM works. It is not a separate directory. The Adobe folder directory is the same as your OS directory. Any changes you make in LrC/Lr are automatically updated in your OS and vice versa.

Getting set up properly is the key. After that it is a breeze. I've been using since 2011 starting with LR5. 12 years of upgrades (including the catalogue) and never had a single issue. When I read about problems it's usually because people didn't follow a few basic steps which I call simple and easy maintenance.

It is always best to move flies around using LrC so that catalogue knows where you moved them. You don't ever have to worry about linking. If you move tens of thousands of files it is better to use the OS. When done in LrC/Lr re-establish the link at the root folder.

Don't forget about your personal website that comes with the plan. Portfolio which is integrated with LrC. I don't know how it works with Lr. You get up to 5 websites.

Thanks a ton. This will help me a lot as a beginner. When I paid for the plan, the first thing after CC desktop installation was it started installing Lr. Then I selected LrC and PS to install. I will most likely use only PS and LrC. Will go through the links you provided. I know a bit about catalogs since I have been following and reading the posts here and at other places. There will be some starting hiccups for which I am prepared and will also find answers on the forum here.

Didn't know about personal website. Thanks for the tip. So I will need to use Lr for personal website?

No you can use LrC for that. You can upload collections to the cloud which would be Smart Previews. Those can be downloaded to your site. That’s the integrated part which I don’t know much about. I just upload single files off my computer.

Good idea. Start with LrC and PS. Get used to everything and then explore Lr later. Hint. Since Adobe introduced advanced masking in version 11, I have not had a need to send a file from LrC to PS. Later I’ll post a few videos about masking and you can watch them when you are ready.

There are two videos that cover how to change the colour of an object.

Thanks digital_paradise for the valuable video links. Just saw your post. Will go through them later. Edit - Just watched all the videos. Quite informative. And helpful.

I also installed the PS 24.7 Beta since the Generative Fill intrigued me. Now to figure out how to let LrC know which version of PS to open! Regular or Beta?

I only recently started using the Beta version too, and I found that it often opened Beta when I wanted the stable version. What works for me is to open whichever you want manually. Then when you tell lightroom to edit in photoshop, it will use whichever is open.

How you upload to the web depends in part on what site you will use to display images. For Flicker & Smugmug, which I use, and some other sites, you can install nifty plugins from Jeffrey Friedl (http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies (external link)) which makes this very simple.

When I set the 2024 version in open with preferences, the Beta starts and shows home screen but the image doesn't open. After a while LrC pops a message that the file cannot be opened. then a message the file will not be opened. Once I press OK to both messages, it opens after waiting like ages. So I have changed the preferences back to 2023. Even when manually I start Beta and then select in LrC Edit in-> PS 2024, same thing happens. So I will for now stick to 2023. And consider opening in Beta only when I feel the need to use GF.

I have not tried the Beta version but I have read about issues sending files from LrC. I don’t know much about it. Thanks for responding everyone.

Thanks everyone for helping me out for understanding the apps. Attaching a photo which I just picked up to try GF. The bee seen in the center is the one generated by AI on first attempt. Not bad considering its positioning. This was just an experimental image to get the hang of things.
