While in Tanzania, my friend really took a liking to the "tire sandals" that many Masai men wore. It turns out you can buy them at the local markets. about 15 minutes to get a custom-made pair. 20,000km tread life warranty ;)

Like any good shop - you get to choose your model.

Personalized fitting.

Trying them out for fit with the locals looking at you like you're a crazy man.

I wonder - if that is what they wear, and what is normal for them, then why would they look at you like you are crazy if you are just doing what is normal and everyday for them?

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I think its because they know that mzungu prefer to wear Nike and Adidas :) While they may be what the locals wear, they sure aren't what the outsiders wear - no cushioning on the sole and no arch support. On top of that, they don't get many mzungu at the local markets. Lucky for us, our guide was from the area so we stopped in and did a bit of shopping. Most people just whizz by on their way to see the animals.

It's such a valuable experience to get to spend time in places that most tourists don't see any to interact with the everyday citizens who don't normally interact with the tourists.

100% It really makes the trip a great experience.
We also went to a "Masai village" and it was just a horrible tourist trap experience. 1 out of 10... would not recommend.

I agree. during most of my trips, I even get to work with local people and nearly live as they do.

When I travel for wildlife photography, I usually meet up with local photographers and shoot with them. And of course eat meals together after a long day of shooting. I also usually stay in someone's home instead of getting a hotel room. Granted, my trips are not overseas or anything exotic, but living in and among the locals still gives me a much better sense of the region I'm in than I would get if I stayed in hotels and shot alone. Even more so for the overseas trips that some of you guys do.
