Pekka thank you for all of your efforts. A lot of us have met life long friends here who have seen each other grow and mature in life with one common thread being photography. As many have said I learned most of what I know thanks to your forum. From the 2 AM crew who were probably a thorn in your side when we were much younger humans thanks for putting up with us. We truly became better people after all lol

I have a desktop, same difference really. I have my phone plugged into my desktop now but do not know how to find my pictures this way. I am definately not a computer guru. Sure wish I knew how to do that! I do have Flickr but do not know how to do that with Flickr either.

Sent you a pm, hope it helps.

Open suggestion to POTN users...

After reading Pekka's two posts in this thread, it appears that he is not likely to reverse his decision. Also, he has pointed out the complexity and other problems associated with moving the site to another platform or having someone else take over the site. Many users in this thread have also offered to pay for a subscription model to help the site stay afloat.

I have an idea, and you may either agree or disagree, but I think it would be nice to show our community's appreciation to Pekka by donating to Pekka directly via this site. Such a donation is NOT meant to be an attempt to change Pekka's mind to keep the site afloat, but rather it is a heart-felt thank you to him as he closes the door later this year. Nevertheless, he would be free to do whatever he would like with the donations if he sees any viable future to using the donations to keep the site operating.

All us have different financial situations, but Pekka's devotion to us over the years, in my mind, certainly deserves some recognition as he retires from the site. I have just donated $100, and I invite anyone who may be interested in this suggestion to join me by donating whatever your wallet will bear.

Here's a link to the POTN donation page if you're interested.

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/donate.php

Thanks again Pekka for looking out for us all these years, and all the best to you.

Tom

I see a lot of bargaining in this thread.

That's an interesting comment.

Pekka

As I sit here smoking a nice MY FATHER cigar while sipping a wee dram of Highland Single Malt Scotch I want to say THANK YOU PEKKA! This site has brought people together that would ordinarily never meet and, in the process, allowed us to view images from around the world that we would ordinarily never see.

This has been a wonderful ride!

Thank you!

I'm heartbroken to read this, but I understand.

Thank you, Pekka. You've created an incredible site with the best user interface I've ever seen, for a forum.

I have no idea where I'll go to find the kind of content available, here. :(

Regardless, all the best, to you, Pekka!

If you'd like, I can take over hosting the forums? I have several servers that I pay for that I do nothing with. There's tons of knowledge and info here that I don't want to see go away. I have a few ideas that may get more activity. Let me know if interested.
.

.
But Pekka does not want anyone to know the interworkings of his AMASS software that this entire site is built on. . How could you, or anyone else, keep this site going if the software it is made from is to remain top secret?

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

The answer is in Pekka's opening post:

If POTN is sold it is not possible for me to use many parts of my own code for security reasons in any other projects - that will not be cheap. I'm realist, though, and expect no one is interested.

Prior to that comment:
I have no time to tutor how to do that but I will help to get started. (referring to actually setting up servers etc)

So a number of dollars would allow AMASS to continue to be used after setting up on new servers. It would also need someone, or some people, to be capable of learning AMASS without 'tutoring', just 'some help' to get started.

Looking at the decline in traffic to POTN over the past few years, a realistic expectation is the 'not cheap' number of dollars and the time taken to learn AMASS by the buyer(s) could result in another MOST IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL in a couple of years.

Optimism is generally admired over pessimism, but pessimism is often realistic.

I'm always telling people I'm not a pessimist, I'm just realistic.

Looking at the decline in traffic to POTN over the past few years

That's what no one here can bargain about or fix. The environment of photography is changing as smartphones take over. I discussed POTN's troubles with someone the other day who isn't a photographer but is old enough to remember when being a photographer meant using film and doing your own darkroom work. The person said that photography with dedicated cameras is a baby-boomer thing. It's aging out.

So many POTNers are moving to other sites that even fewer will be left here. They aren't going to post their photos in both places and donate to both places, are they?
