Jay,
If POTN goes away completely, which it looks like, would you be willing to host a new POTN-like site built with free forum SW like https://www.simplemachines.org/ (external link) ?

DM

The hardest part about hosting a new forum is if people don't come. If people don't come it won't be worth it. I'd be willing to get a new forum setup but it would use the same type forum software as this as Vbulletin is what I know. If people were serious, I'd look more into your forum software for sure.

This isn't the first and only board hosted on Vbulletin. Some of us have owned and ran fourms for years.

.
Jay, the way you worded this, it seems like you think that POTN is using VBulletin software. . You are aware that POTN has not run on VBulletin since 2015, aren't you?

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

That's what no one here can bargain about or fix. The environment of photography is changing as smartphones take over. I discussed POTN's troubles with someone the other day who isn't a photographer but is old enough to remember when being a photographer meant using film and doing your own darkroom work. The person said that photography with dedicated cameras is a baby-boomer thing. It's aging out.

So many POTNers are moving to other sites that even fewer will be left here. They aren't going to post their photos in both places and donate to both places, are they?

What frustrates me is the alternatives people are moving to. Pekka covered it well in his post.
They are designed for short attention span.

I have a 2010 model, Australian made car, ie, very common.
Forums still allow me to easily find information I need for repairs or maintenance.
I can read a comment made in 2010 and then follow a thread with comments made over the next several years.
Within a few minutes I can be confident information is correct and further, any little details missed in the first post will be included in further posts, usually with photos.
Even with crude search functions (compared to the fantastic AMASS search function), I can find information easily.
It's obvious this will not be the case for my next car.

People often mention Facebook is OK for the same purpose, what a load of garbage.

My Facebook had no search button for a couple of years. After several days of Googling, the search button returned.
Now, call me a conspiracist, but it seems pretty obvious which two dots join to arrive at a conclusion.

Over the next week, I searched multiple times, using the same search word, a Facebook page I manage.
Results varied each time. Some common results, some new each time, never complete though.
This, with me always using easy to search posts.
eg, it's a Bird and Wildlife page so every post will start with species

eg, Osprey. Today I watched the Osprey for a couple of hours and......

So a search of "Osprey" should return around 200 or more results. I'd get about 15.

That's just the search function. I won't continue my rant to include all the problems....

I think that's a mostly accurate comment.
It's also not the complete story.

eg:
1/ film is a trend now with young people.
2/ Fuji X100 V. It's now very expensive and hard to get due to influencers.

I never heard anyone predicting the return of music on vinyl.
A lot of human behaviour is predictable, definitely not all though.

Yep - I can see a cult movement returning to film, I was given an old (good condition) Fujica Film camera with WA prime lens, and as I did not need it - it sold.

Bruh, I just scored a mint Canon AE-1. Just been in a bag in the backseat of my car for a month now. You telling me it may have a future?

It has a future of giving your bag something to do. :-)

I may be a bit old in my late 50's but having an 8 year old keeps your vocabulary hip and recent.

I had some really good times with my old Film SLRs, my old Canon EOS 650 won me a prize for an airshow photo, I also had great memories with a Minolta 7000i.

I have a Minolta MAXXUM given to me by my brother and an Olympus OM-1 from my mother,
but all I've ever wanted to do with them is alter their focus screens to fit my 50D or 5DMK4.
Precision work that I'm probably incapable of doing.

I still have my original Canon A-1. I purchased it for my honeymoon quite some time ago. Pre-2005 I used it quite a bit and even as late as 2015, I tried to shoot with it a couple times a year. Thinking about I think the last time I used it was maybe 2018 or 2019. Now it just sits in it's bag in my closet.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.
