I am so pleased that there is good news on the horizon. I'm not sure I can stand the chaotic forum structure at Cameraderie much longer. The more one looks , the more one finds -?

OTOH, there is a lot of photographic talent there.

I tend to agree on the C, Martin. I feel like I'm giving it my best effort but it isn't the best layout or have the best features, IMO. I'm not sure I will last. As far as a new forum, I'll take a wait and see on that. POTN is one of a kind so...

I have logged many times into a couple of different (new for me as of the past month) forums suggested in recent threads on POTN, and find, in accessing them multiple times, that I have less and less reason to go back to visit them, primarily due to the shortage of current discussion traffic (this, in spite of other POTN members trying them out, too). I find not much there...like visiting the bakery and most of the things there are months old, not mucj fresh baked goods!
Meanwhile I recently find that forums from my past -- that I had abandoned participation in the past -- to be fresh in the variety of current discussions and the quanitity of recent posts by others...Fred Miranda is one of these photography sites.

If I were starting from scratch, it would be PHP, MariaDB, and javascript (particularly jQuery) and NO FRAMEWORKS.

Well said.

That is how I did it with AMASS:

PHP (procedural)
jQuery (was very new when I started)
MariaDB
Redis (was very new when I started)

All was coded natively in what I call a "RISC principle", i.e. I avoided using any high-level functions (easier upgrades), I avoided using relational dbs (no lock issues or messed-up relations). I used 7 Redis instances. Most of the time (6 years work to version 1) went to data structure design, but I never had to correct those later.

Most fun to code is UI with jQuery. I takes time to get it right and optimize it, though. I recall I spent days to make sticky avatars work smoothly with all kinds of browsers, F12 is your friend there.

Pekka,

Many have said something similar to this, but you did a splendid job building AMASS!

What you said to us just here is all GREEK to me! I did not understand one word you told us here!!

You invited me to join in on your AMASS Beta coverage which I enjoyed immensely, but I did not understand anything there either. I thank you for that!!
