I tried to sort out G3 close-up and macro and to fit "nomel's trick" into the picture:
Have a look @: http://homepage.hispeed.ch …/digifoto/g3-close-up.htm (external link)

Ok- question: If someone wanted to create something that was actually designed to do this, then it would involve designing modification of the barrel, and not the camera itself right?
As in- someone could potentially design and package (for sale) a 'G3 compatible modification of standard lense assembly' that was designed to do this?
BTW- 'designed to do this' means the new design addresses all the bugs involved in doing it the jury rig method.

Just to let you know,

I have been able to use the manual focus for distances greater than 2 feet (according to the position indicator), but anything less than 2 feet causes bad sounds. And, if your subject is in the range that actually focus's, autofocus seems to work fine. I don't reccomend this even slightly, but, just to let you know. :) I do use it that way often (for stress testing).

can i use this focussing ring method:

a) NOT using full zoom
b) for random subjects at different distances rather than macros?

Yes, it can be used for non macro shots. I use it as a manual focus anytime instead of the awfull wheel.

And for a modification. I'm sure it could be done in firmware (which I doubt can be modified). It could be done electronically, so that the motor turns the ring instead of you, which would get rid of any bad forces on the gears. But, I doubt it could be done without getting to the motor (which I have thought about).
