Gr, I'm all annoyed at this. CS2 is supposed to have RAW support built in, isn't it? I'm trying to mess with RAW a little bit because I've always used JPEG. Hmm :-/

I try to open it directly from photoshop, it says "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document." Blah. So I go to Adobe Bridge and hold shift + double click because that's what it says to do in Photoshop Help. Same thing happens and now I'm all mad.

Is this just a really obvious stupid begginer problem? :o

You have to convert the photos to DNG first (at least I have to). You will have a DNG converter program in your Photoshop folder.

It may be for either of two reasons -
1) you may not have upgraded your ACR plug-in from v 2.4 to the later version, or
2) you may have a camera model so new that it is not yet supported by ACR.

As was pointed out by "Sageg", the workaround for an unsupported new camera is to use the DNG program (free from Adobe) to convert from CR2 to DNG. The latest ACR will read all DNG files.

Have you tried DPP? So far I'm pretty happy with using this free program from Canon. Visit the website to download.

You need to update Adobe Camera RAW to version 3.3.

The original CS2 version doesn't support a lot of the RAW formats. Get the free Adobe Camera RAW upgrade and it'll work just fine for you. Promise.

Hi,
I'm also fighting the demons and am a noobie at Camera RAW. I don't know if my problem is due to me or the software!
I cannot open my RAW files (which I converted to DNG) from either Bridge or Camera Raw dialogue box when I have got there through Bridge. I get no error messages, the screen just reverts back to Bridge - its as though it's completely ignoring me!! I have upgraded to version 3.3 but still no joy.
If I open the files from Photoshop by doing File - Open, it will open from the camera raw dialogue. Why can't I do this from Bridge?? i hope this makes sense to you cos it dont for me!!

Thanks in anticipation

From within Bridge, use Edit->Preferences and select "File Type Associations" in the left hand panel. Then in the right hand panel go down through the list of file types and pick DNG. In that line, you have to browse to a program to open this file type (it will currently say "none"). Just browse to Photoshop.exe and from then on the DNG files will open OK from Bridge.

Thanks Guys! This had been very helpful. But the link is outdated and only available for those using CS3.

For those who used the search function, and wonder where to get the update for CS2, here is the link:

Hi guys,

Continuing the same thread. I am having the same issue with the .cr2 raw format. When I try to open it in photoshop, I get the prompt "Could not complete your request because its not the right type of document".

Please note that I have all the updates for CS2, including the camera raw 3.7 plugin (latest). I also have the canon raw codec and the canon utilities (zoom browser etc) installed on my computer. And its a vista OS. ( not sure if that makes a difference). I have tried a lot of things. Does anyone have a solution to this or any other ideas?

Cheers.

I don't know Camera Raw 4.6 support CS2 or not but you can give them a try.
CR 5 is for CS4.

My humble tool : Canon EOS 1000D + EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM + EF 85 f/1.8 USM

Its generally helpful to say what make and model camera you're using.
