Couldn't believe my luck. Spotted a female Pileated Woodpecker close-by on the ground, so I laid down on my stomach to get to eye level (or close to it)with her. A couple of shots later a male flies in, grabs her by the bill and holds on for a few seconds, then jumps on her back...I think you know the rest!;)

It was over as fast as it started...talk about timing!!

1 - The male shows up, grabbing her by the bill
2 - The action heats up
3 - Look at her face...she's enjoying this!
4 - One happy gal...

Yes, these shots are lucky, but they are also good. Lucky because being in the right place at the right time with that light is luck, unless one knows the lives of these woodpeckers inside out. Good because being in the right place at the right time means nothing unless the shooter maintains his or her eye for composition and a steady hand. Dan did both. Beautiful series.

Paul, that last image may contain a smile, but that's the she smiling, not the he.
