The P-51 was built as an interceptor to protect the bombers, and that's exactly the way we used it. A group of about 50 fighters would form three squadrons and escourt two boxes of bombers that were part of a longer stream. We worked long range; what the spitfire did for 45 minutes we could do for eight hours. Or missions averaged arround six hours. A lot of guys got killed, and you killed a lot of guys.
