"My favorite airplane was the P-51 Mustang because I flew it in combat. The P-51 was built as an interceptor to protect the bombers, and that's exactly the way we used it. A group of about 50 fighters would form three squadrons and escourt two boxes of bombers that were part of a longer stream.
