well I took advice and bought a cheap lens to practice with (if cheap is $100 bucks !)

I only got it today .. so forgive the crudeness of the pictures cos I havent the foggiest what I am doing yet.. but I had to try it out :)

What do you think ??? and not of the scruffy mutt .. she had just had a bath and not even brushed, but the pictures themselves (top one is the altered one .. although only slightly)

and critism as always is welcome :cool:

(although not too harsh as I have a horrible day :evil: )

VERY nice:)
Looks like you'll have to stick with the cheap lens,'cause you're not going to get much better pics with the super expensive lenses!LOL ;);)
These tamrons do give about the best value $/image quality around

I'm guessing these are the same image but the first one has been post proccessed?If so then you're doing it right:)

I used to have that lens and it did great for macro. My only complaint was the purple fringing with heavy contrast was awful on my copy.

But for the money it is an excellent peice of glass.

thanks .. made my day to hear that .. and it was sure a horrible day .. so glad something came out of it good :}}}

dying to practice with it more :) :)

I agree .. its knowing how to take a photo with these camera's thats the trick .. then you need an artist eye to get it right, and then on top of that you need to edit it .. - Makes my head even thinking about it all this early in a morning :}

Not that I'm biased or anything (being the previous owner and all :D) but those pics look darn nice.

I hope you have as much fun with it as I did, its a real gem for the price.

BTW - Nice dog. Dogs and kids always look best right after a bath and before all the civilized grooming.

Jill, I am very interested in your experiences with this lens because I have been considering it, too. Of course IF I could afford it there are Canon 70-300 and Sigma 70-300 but I can't afford it... so I was wondering how "tolerable" the Tamron 70-300 was for the price. I also have a Rebel XT, love my Tamron 28-75 mm 2.8. I am thinking of the 70-300 as a travel/ moderate wildlife/ candid lens. I also have tiny hands, so the Tamron appeals to me. I know there are much better lenses, but are they 5-6 times better, to equal the 5-6 times the price?

And for anybody... is the 200-300 range on the Tamron really soft, or is it usable with PP sharpening?

Jessica

my take was .. I am very very new to photography apart from Point & shoot ..and it was only a few weeks ago I bought this camera (which I love but its hard to work out etc ie M ) ... so I considered the more expensive options, but still couldnt justify to myself to buy a more expensive lens .. I dont have the money hanging around too, who does with a three year old in tow !!! and I was so undecided whether I would get the use out of it and wanted all the other assessories like the bag, a UV lens etc .. that I thought walk before I run.

So when offered this, second hand .. I thought what the heck, although even new i was considering the lower end prices as I didnt want to spend $k and then think what the heck have I done ..

my advice ... if you are really keen on doing photography, havent the spare cash to spend on really expensive lens .. buy the cheaper 3rd party ones, and if you like what you get, or feel the need further down the line to get a more expensive one .. you can sell the "cheaper one" as they seem to hold their prices - check ebay out to see what I mean, and upgrade then.

all I can say is .. this lens does far more than I thought and it blow my mind when I focused it last night on the mountain across from our house and I could see the ppl in the ski-lifts !!! talk about cool or what :)

Photography review rates consumer zooms in the 70ish - 300mm range as follows

Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 LD - 4.25
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6III - 2.75
Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro Super - 3.83

For the price the Tamron can't be beaten

I know there must be a way to know this without saving the pictures from the post, but are the above pictures taken in the 200-300 mm range?

If not, would somebody who owns this lens please post a few pics at that end of the range?

Thanks,

Jessica
