Camera for a beginner

Hi, I'm a beginner and I have used a powershot a75 for photos but have become very annoyed with its limited possibilities.

I can't manually focus other than on the tiny screen that is hard to tell when things are focused on, not to mention that it takes forever. Its the same with aperture and exposure. I can't adjust anything without piddling around for an hour and losing what I wanted to capture.

Do you think I should invest in something new? What type of camera should I get? What would allow me to adjust settings more easily? I've looked at moderately priced cameras like S2's and such, but I have no idea really what to look for.

Hi Jonathan, I think the best way to address your needs is to go to an actual brick and mortar camera store, and handle a few of the different styles you are interested in. This will help you decide if one is too fiddly, while another may fit the description of your perfect camera.

I have to agree with Bruce -- there's nothing like holding a camera in your hands and getting a feel for it. I used to have your problem... (I had a Noink 5700) thought about buying another advanced (no offense) P&S but ended up with a 20D and I haven't looked back. Maybe it was also an easier transition for me since I started shooting a little more seriously with a Canon film SLR.

At the end of the day you will need to go with something that will meet all your requirments plus be future-proof (for at least 2-5 years) If you forsee yourself getting very serious with your photography one of these days then a 2nd hand 20D, a BN 30D, 350D might do it for you. If you want something handy and can easily fit into your pocket whilst taking absolutely good pics, an S2 or better might be all you will need.

Sorry, I'm not one of those people who will tell you to buy this and that... I will leave he final decision to you since only you can decide what's good or bad.
