3/31/06 a tornado hit Greenwood. Indiana along Acton Rd, tore up some houses pretty bad. I grabbed my camera and went out the next day to get insurance and record shots (free of charge of course) for the locals. 102 images.

Question for some of you with more experience with back-lit shots. I shot these metered (manual at 1/250th, changing aperture only) for the background sky, and used my 430EX with the LS2PJ and inverted dome in direct mode E-TTL II and I used partial metering. I was happy with 99% of the images, but some had the foreground just a bit too blown out as you can see. Any suggestions? Maybe just a little FEC when shooting close objects? My work is usually sports, groups, portraits and dance candids, so this type of shooting is quite new to me.

To me, rather than the technical issues of 430 EX etc, I would say your shots of that fantastic damage are too tight. I don't get much sense of the magnitude of the destruction. As far as exposure, they are ok for me. Nobody has much experience with this kind of shooting, which is probably why no response.

Thanks for the input! After looking over the images again, I agree, a bit too tight. I was focusing too much on small bits and pieces, and not the big picture. I am looking to invest in a good wide-angle lens for just such a thing, my current lens line-up goes only to 28mm on the wide end (plus a 1.6 crop...). Don't want to spend too much money on it, as it will sit in my camera bag 90% of the time, but it would be nice to have.
