Avoid 3/4 length shots for a portrait, either head, head/shoulders, half length or full length, unless it's for a fashion product where you'll need the length to compliment products. Make use of shadows to compensate or compliment your subject, a great photo consists beautiful combination of highlight, midtone and shadow.
