I posted a similar picture to this in another section of this forum and got the suggestion that I should go back and try photographing it without the flash. Soooo, I went back yesterday and took it again. Is this one okay?

I fancy it might look a bit better on an overcast day when it's a bit more moody and dark.

I think it would work better on an overcast day, just so you get more even lighting, but it's an awesome subject!

Maybe even a B&W conversion. I am not fond of the composition. I would like to see more of the tree if possible. I would like to get a sense of the tree's presence and size. Is it a Banyan tree? If so, I know that these trees can get absolutely huge so it might not even be possible.

No, not a Banyan Tree, a Fig. I could have, and in fact did, take pictures of the whole tree, but then you don't even notice the seat. This tree is huge. Tried B&W but I like colour better.

Gotcha. I had a feeling it was huge.

Meaty0, This is a cool picture, and I agree with the idea to get it again in some moody light. Would be kinda spooky. Will that tree eventually gobble up that bench?
Best regards
BG :)

I would have liked to see more of the tree instead of being zoomed into only the bench. To give perspective to how big the tree might be - show the context of the scene.

I did not see the orignal with flash, but I like this one.

It might even make a good monochrome. I can see it in my mind's eye as a sepia toned print. What do you think?

I like it, but I like B&W better. Here's my go since you have "image editing" turned on.

Channel mixer R10 G 60 B 30 (or so), channels merged, contrast + 30. Different parts of the image look better with different channels, so with some time (a bunch of time - an hour at least) and layer masks you could really make it *pop*.

No it'll spring the boards off it and the City Council will have to remove the concrete remains. The boards will eventually be incorporated into the tree I suppose.:D Cool hey?

Thanks Bob.

I've just upgraded to Photoshop CS2 and haven't figured out how to do good monochrome conversions yet...feel free to have a go.

Thanks again,
Paul

EDIT: How's this?

Hey meaty0, CS2 huh? How is it? I like your original version of this better. This one, the bench gets lost.

CS2 is a quantum leap more complex that Elements 4.0:( More learning required...oh well, there goes all my spare time...for the rest of my life;)

I suck at B&W conversion...so I like my original better too.

EDIT: How's this?

Dear Paul,

Your original post at the top of this thread was fine. The suggestion to do a monochrome and Tim's version came out OK. Then the Sepia toned version came out as a completely different picture from a more distant vantage point, so it can no longer be compared with the two earlier versions.

I still think the Sepia tone would be good - not necessarily better. In any case, the last version above is really a different picture with a completely different composition and the bench gets rather lost for two reasons - it's a smaller part of the image, and the emphasis from its different color is missing.
