Greetings all!

Like many other folks, soon I will be getting a 30D. This will be my first DSLR so I'm not as comfortable with choosing glass as with a film camera.

I would like opinions as to which two lenses would be good to start with. I would like a wide angle/close range lens and a medium telephoto, about 200mm. As to cost, I would rather spend more initially for a better lens than buy the low end economy stuff.

All opinions welcome and very much appreciated. Thanks to you all!:)

Ron

I think you have answered your own question..
Wide... 16-35 f/2.8L or 17-40 f/4L
Medium Tele 70-200 f/2.8L
These are, IMHO, the class acts in those ranges... Others may have different opinions...

I was in the same boat. I started out with the 28-105mm as just a simple walk around. It was cheaper ($220) than other lenses and still sharp and nice. It was very good for getting a feel for the camera and what I like.

Just ordered the 17-40mm f/4L, should be here next week. That'll be a damn nice wide angle (will get even wider some day, the 10-22, but this is plenty for now.)

Plan on maybe the 70-200 later in life.

You asked for it...

I think this will prove to be a brilliant two lens kit.

Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS

Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS

This 2 lens kit will give you Canon's USM autofocus, f/2.8 aperture AND IS from 17mm to 200mm with only an insignificant gap between 55mm to 70mm. The most versatile 2 lens kit available for a 1.6x crop camera at any price IMHO (this is not cheap, but should prove it's worth over time).

Canon 20D w/grip, 300D, Powershot SX100 w/HF-DC1 flash, Canon 70-200 f/2.8L, 85 f/1.8, 17-55 f/2.8 IS, 50 f/1.8, 580EX and some other stuff...

I have no complaints about the 17-40 f4L and the 70-200 f4L.
