Like many people, I am considering either the EF 70-200mm f/4L or the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS. Even more so since you can get either one for about $500 at Amazon after rebate. Since I'm only a semi-newbie I think I know that the 70-200mm has a constant aperature of f/4 and the 70-300mm has a maximum aperature of f/4 at 70mm and f/5.6 at 300mm.

My question is what is the maximum aperature of the 70-300mm at a focal length of 200mm? How would I find that out before I buy one (without asking you guys/gals)? Do I need to know that to properly compare the speed of these two lenses since you shouldn't really compare one at 200mm and one at 300mm anyway?

Thanks in advance.

i cant answer your question as i dont own that lens... but as an owner of the 70-200 i can tell you its a great piece of glass! you wont regret buying it. just do a quick search on these forums and see how many people are happy with it, its gotta be the most popular telephoto...

I have owned the 70-200 f/4.0 and it is a wonderful lens. The 70-300 doesn't look bad at all though judging by Tirzah's post:

If you need the extra 100mm and/or the IS, then get the 70-300...if you don't, then get the 70-200 :)

Have fun making a tough decision.
