Here's a switcher moving some coaches around. I'm still learning about resizing for posting images on websites.

That pic. was taken from the C-Street Overpass in Anchorage. I stopped on the offramp when no one was on the street. I'm sure if the ARR security would have seen me, they would have detained, even though it was taken from the street and not on ARR property. That was taken about 2 months ago. I checked the camera files, it was pic. #47 off the new XT. Rebel T4i 18-55 IS Kit Lens

The White coaches in the background are owned by Royal Caribbean. They are used to haul tourist around in the summer. Alaska doesn't have commuter trains, supposedly they will some year. The tracks are being upgraded all over the state and they want a commuter to run from Wasilla to Anchorage. The McKinley Explorer coaches with the AC units on the top ends where used to haul tourist during the summer. They are for sale, some have been sold. I think there was 8 or 10 of those up here, I know 3 were sold. Rebel T4i 18-55 IS Kit Lens

Croasdail making stuff up More info | Apr 06, 2006 10:38 | #12 It has been many years since I was up there doing business with BP and the State, but at that time they did have some sort of commuter service using rail deisel cars. I have some pictures of them somewhere. Are they not in service anymore?

The RDCs are mainly used in the summer on the Talkeetna - Hurricane Turn. I believe they get parked in the winter. In the past the RDCs were used on the Saturday Whittier - Portage runs, in the winter. In the old days the ARR also ran the Whittier Shuttle. You could drive your car on the flatcars for a 13 mile ride to get into and out of Whittier. In 2000 the state completed a road to Whittier. Now the ARR tunnel is shared with cars, 1 lane road. Each direction is opened for 15 min. at a time and closed when a train needs to get through. Rebel T4i 18-55 IS Kit Lens
