Please critique this shot. I posted it on an open-gallery-rate-my-photo kind of site and have gotten lots of views, very few comments and an impression that people think it's either not good enough or not bad enough to comment. Or something.

The girl is at a nightclub doing the lightshow. Lens: 135L wide open, with just a little flash fired.

i dont have any experience with portraits but i reckon it would be nicer if we could see what she was concentrating on... ie a bit of a wider shot, showing some of the equipment. i like it though

I can see what you tried to do. To focus on the subject and bring your eyes over to the woman but I think it's a little too blury. It's sposed to look like a DOF thing but to me looks like an over blurred section around the subject.. My 5c..

Yeah DOF looks a little narrow to me.

It's a very nice image, but I have to agree with the PP. I think the blur is nice, but less on the subject would be my preference. Maybe take it off the forehead and the top left of her shirt. If you post it sooc, I would love to play with it in PS. :)

Like the subject but the blur is way to much for me.

Depth of field may be a little narrow but this a very good shot of how one immerses oneself in whats on the screen. I wouls prefer if the image of the person in the background was eliminated from the scene though.

Thank you, your answers gave me the general, but very good idea why the image lacks appeal.

taramcg: I failed to find "sooc" in my dictionary...

Sorry, I meant straight out of the camera, i.e. untouched.

I thought "sooc" was Scottish for "suck"... ;)

The only part of the narrow DOF that I find unsuccesfull is that the left side of the subject herself is blurred,. almost like a line right down her nose. I like that everything else is blurred out though.

Here, I only resized it with bicubic sharper and saved with 7 jpeg compression.

The first one has more blur, obviously. I wanted to smoothen her skin, so I doubled the layers, to the top one I applied about 8.0 of gaussian blur and then faded it to about 40%, deleted the eyes, hair and lips. Also, I gently retouched her skin reflections.

Now taking a look at these again, I think cloning out the man in the background would have been an improvement. She has a very pretty face.

How does exif show 216mm @ F2. What lens did you use?

I also think at 1/15th her eyes blinked causing blur.

I like the photos you have that are from older posts. I feel like you're over working the blur on the last few posts. This photo in particular, I looked at the blob in the upper right corner before anything else. In looking back at your others I love the candid shots of the women. I think it's kinda creepy and makes me feel like the girls are being stalked. But, you got me to feel something about the photo so, the point was made.
I think you may need to work on the skin of your subjects. Soften it up a bit, smooth it out. I personally don't like looking inside my pores let alone anyone elses. And I bet that one girl would kill you if she saw the wrinkle shadows around her eyes. Just lighten a little. I'm not saying remove them completely just lighten them up.
