Forced to use Canon DPP for 30D Raw conversion, I was wondering about specifying DPP Preferences

Since my objective is the maximum quality, I changed the default to "Quality Priority" in Operating Mode and set luminance and chrominance noise reduction to high. Is there any downside, other than processing time, to doing noise reduction on all images, even if not needed?

Also the "Output Resolution Value" default is 350 dpi, with a generous range of 1 -60000 dpi possible. Does this Value refer to display, print or what?

In my experience the NR set to high is similar to that of in camera NR and it seems to adjust according to the amount of noise.

The amount is verry subtle and very good considering noise/deail, but this is subjective and i suggest you make your own tests.

You will not feel any difference in conversion speed.

For an explanation on DPI check this link:

You should be aware that any time NR is applied you pay a price in loss of detail. More NR, less detail. Part of being a photographer is deciding where to draw the line, just like sometimes you have to accept the higher noise of a high ISO in order get a sharpness-making shutter speed. Your photo, your decision.

Personally, (and provisionally) after playing around with it a bit, I've decided on: ISO up to 400, "No Luminence", "Low Color"; ISO 800, "Low/Low"; and ISO 1600, "High/High". This is in regard to an XT.

As for DPI, forget about it. It has meaning only for printing, and even there it's of limited use.

Interesting, I am using DPP lately too, but I didnt tried NR in DPP at all, instead I just use Noise Ninja after DPP conversion to tiff/jpeg is done (tiff for important images or where futher editing is reqd, rest jpeg)
I have one batch of iso1600 RAW's to convert, I can try high & low settings combo to see how it goes :-)

Interresting - i will do some more testing on this. Up until now i have not noticed any signifigant difference and in general find DPP NR very gentle, but i will investigate. Thanks for sharing.

I haven't used DPP in about a year, but when I received my 30D, I installed it so I could open the RAW files until updates are available for ACR, RSP and C1 LE.
I was pleasently surprised at how quickly it displayed the thumbnails (no waiting for them to be created like in the others).
I did a few conversions, and when I opened them in PS, they seemed a bit cleaner than I had been used to in the other apps with my 20D.
Since then, I've run the hack for ACR (which works fine) and did a few comparisons. I converted a few shots with both ACR and DPP, both with default settings.
While in no way was my test extensive, the DPP conversions were definitly a bit cleaner than the ACR conversions. And colors seemed more accurate in DPP, especially reds (ACR is known for reds that tend to look too orange).
