Hi BG,

You deserve a bravery medal for trying a photo that close to your cat. I decided to give that a go a while back and used flash to get the creepy red/white eye reflex. Instead, the flash initiated the "fight or flight" response. In my case, it was "fight" and our loving family cat sunk its claws deep into my fingers!

I agree with the others. Being that close, you only get a small depth of focus and that means you have to use a small aperture, (select Av and use f/8 or less), but then you have to use a longer exposure time. And kitty isn't going to be still that long. So you have to crank up the ISO, which means a DARK kitty might have a lot of noise in the photograph...PHEW! confusing hey?

Or you could do what I did and use a flash; use a remote flash if you can. But wear gloves!:D

Hi paul, howz the finger doin?:( OK I hear ya, what ISO do you recommend? How high? I don't have a flash except the on board and i don't like it much, but do you think if i can tape a piece of paper or cloth over it it won't be so harsh? I'm going to try that and see. Not to confusing this time, I'm hoping some more repetition will make it all sink in eventually. I'm a hands on student. But Always a BIG THANKS for your help/time.
PeACE,
BG

For a flash diffuser -- try anything. I've even used a kleenex draped over the on-camera flash with some success. My newborn had a particularly cute expression and pose, and my 580ex hadn't arrived yet -- it actually did a great job of providing enough light, but without creating sharp shadows.

Thanks ibdb, I will try it out.

PeACE,

As Radtech mentioned...ISO 400 would probably be OK, but try it at 200 also (if puss will sit still for TWO flash photos).
