I have a dilemma and would like to humbly ask for your opinions please. As with a HI FI the music only sounds as good as the speakers or only as good as it's source.
I have a Canon D30 [the original 3 Megapixel NOT 30D body] A Tokina 19 - 35 lens [which i was considering upgrading for the 17-40L] and a Canon 100-400 L is lens.
Up until this week i had it in my head to upgrade the camera to a 20D and the lens to a 17-40 L .
However having just returned from a short break walking the coastline and villages on the North Yorkshire coast i found the 100-400 really too powerful for the job.
Hence my dilemma,i have been looking about and would love a Canon 28-300L is ,i feel it would be more than enough to be a all use lens BUT it would wipe out any chance of upgrading the body/wide angle lens.
This is the chicken / egg situation,do i upgrade the body or the lens?
If anyone has any ideas/reviews on comparable quality lenses in that range other than Canon make please could you advise.
Thanks

Have you looked at the price of that Lens?
It's not a very affordable option and the return is iffy at best.
For less $$ you could get a 17-40mm and 70-200mm f/4L... or the 24-105 f/4 and 70-300mm DO...

All lenses mentioned are much lighter... and more affordable.

i think you should upgrade your body. i went from a d30 to a 10d, and its a HUGE difference. so with a 20D, your gonna feel like your in heaven. go with the 20D.

body without a doubt. With a body that old you're seriously seriously going to notice the difference. I think that's a no brainer IMO. The lense can wait in this situation if it were me.

Canon 40D :: 50mm f1.8 mk II :: 17-40mm f4 L :: EX 430 :: Canon EOS 50 :: Canon AE-1 Program :: FD 50mm f1.8 :: FD 28mm f2.8 :: FD 135mm f3.5 :: Ilford HP5 Film :: Developing kit. No website, nothing serious, I just like taking photos

I'd definately upgrade the body. Not only a huge upgrade in feature set, and performance, but a noticable upgrade in resolution. I also agree with CDS, while the 28-300L is argueably a nice lens, it is big, heavy, and expensive.

I think it depends on what you do with your images. The D30 is limited by the number of pixels if you want to make big prints. If it is producing all the resolution you need, why upgrade. A good lens will still be a good lens 10 years from now. A new digital camera will be 10 year old technology by that time. I find that investments in good lenses have much longer lasting value than investments in digital camera bodies.

I am not so certain that a lens like the 28-300 is what I would call a good investment. It is big and heavy and it is almost certain that image quality has to be compromised to achieve that much zoom range. If you are satisfied with the quality that your camera body produces, I would be more inclined to look at the lenses suggested in the previous posts. Namely high qualit wide angle and/or middle distance zoom lenses.

Unfortunately you D30 will not accept EF-S lenses, so there are some other very good solutions that are not available to you with that camera.

why not upgrade to an XT and still get the 17-40L? the XT would be a MAJOR upgrade from your current body and will only cost you around $700. this should leave you with enough money for the 17-40 you want and you will have a great body and 2 fantastic L lenses. also, if your budget allows, you can add the fantastic 70-200F4 or the amazing 85 1.8 to your kit and you wil be golden!!!

FYI,. what I was getting at is maybe it's both.
If you don't like the 100-400mm,. sell it and the D30,. get your new 20D or 30D,. and a nice 200mm or 300mm zoom,. and worry about the replacing the wide angle with the 17-40mm later.

WOW ,Thanks everyone.
I will look at the options and see what i can do.I have only 1 crack at this so it's got to be right hence the worries over lens v body.Lenses seem to stay good quality and don't drop too much in price whereas bodies are almost outdated and old technology pretty quick.
Having only ever used a D30 i know it is limited but was'nt sure whether there is a large picture quality that upgrades or just the functions with the body.
I will keep the D30 ,it's not worth alot unless a shop will trade it in which i doubt for what it's worth in having as a 2nd body.
Well i feel a trip to town this week and some searching on the WWW,Thanks again.

I myself am doing research on dSLRs.... All I can say is that u can get a XT for less than $600 now from B&H cuz theres a $100 rebate floating around until August. I am debating whether or not to go for the 30D or XT for many reasons. That still has yet to be found out. Lowest price from a reputable source (according to others) for the 30D is $1250.
