please help me! my new 30D just arrived about 1 hour ago. so i take everything out of the box etc, put the lense on and all that stuff.

then i take a few photos and everything is going great.

then i go outside in the bright sunlight and look in the viewfinder, i see a small black speck to the above right of the focusing squares!

So i take 1 photo and i am very happy to see that the speck is not on the photo(i looked on the LCD screen and zoomed in)

So i go inside and first take off the skylight filter and its still there. i then use a can of air and try to spray out the speck from the viewfinder. (the place where you look in to take photos) but its still there. I then take off the lense and look through the viewfinder and its STILL THERE!!!!!

Is this normal somehow?????????
When i took the first 4 or 5 shots the speck was not there(at least I think it wasn't) but now the speck has just appeared.

has this happened to anyone??? the speck isnt on my photos when I put them on the computer(thank God) but what should i do!?

Leave it there. It won't harm anything.

If it really bothers you, take the lens off and hold the camera upside down and pointed down somewhat (so that the focusing screen is visible. Hit that with a few puffs from a blower and remount the lens. With luck, the speck will be gone. You can repeat this a couple of times if need be. If it refuses to go away, it might be above the focusing screen in which case it's best to just leave it.

Most likely it is the dust on the penta mirror. Yeah, you can try to open it up and clean it - however it would be counter productive in most cases.

As long as the dust is not on the CMOS sensor you are OK.

Psychologically it is not the most pleasant moment to find a dust spot in your viewfinder. Just view this the other way - take a look at your old Nikon/Canon/Pentax/Contax/whatever SLRs, definitely you would find some dust in the viewfinder. Yet they still take good pictures if films are available!

If I remember correctyl with my old 20D, should be the same as the 30D, the focusing screen is somewhat attached to the entrance to the viewfinder. There are ways to remove it, and than be able to access the area in the prism of the viewfinder. You'll have to search the net for that one.

Be careful with that compressed "air" too - you're really much better off with a squeeze bulb type blower.

Glad you got it sorted - I hate specks just as much as the next guy. :D

Don't worry about the dust in the viewfinder. I had some on mine once. I noticed it just went away on its own. It doesn't affect the pictures in any way.

Using Double Negative's method, I was able to get most of the dust specks out of the viewfinder. Hardly any dust visible at all now. A good thorough blast with a rocket blower once a week should do the trick in keeping the dust in the viewfinder to minimum. ;)
