how do you rate this lens on 5Dmk2? I already have 50 f/1.4 and 85 f/1.8 which are fine but i need something wider and don't have money for 24 or 35 L. As general purpose lens have 24-105.

Any takers to this question. I'm in the same boat except I can't justify buying the 35L. The 28mm 1.8 is looking better and better. Had considered the 35 f2,but want USM. I'm a portrait shooter so I would also like to know how do you guys like this lens for portraits and ff. I only use my 24-105 when traveling, because it's to slow for me for portraits although I have used it for portraits.

I'm happy with portraits with my 28, but I'm on a crop - and, I usually opt for the 50 if I'm purposefully taking a picture of someone. Wouldn't a 28 on a FF give you some interesting distortion?

If you mean traditional portraits it would be classified as awful on full frame. Even as an environmental portrait lens its still awfully wide. You would get a lot of perspective distortion for portrait work unless you are framing very very very loose. Honestly for portraits even a 50 is too wide for traditional portraiture on a full frame camera.

I'm not sure it does ... I haven't really seen it anyway. Maybe if they were on one side, but 28 isn't that wide.

I compared the 28 against the 24L extensivley before settling on the former. The 28/1.8 can be a touch soft wide open, but 2.2-2.5 it rivals the L. Color and contrast are so close as to be almost imperceivable. This is on 5DII.

@frankwite,

If I were you, I would hold out and see what the verdict on the new Sigma 35 1.4 is, it looks like an absolute beauty.

Just my 2 cents :)

Yeah I'm in no big hurry to pull the trigger so I'm going to wait to see what happens unless I find a really good deal on a used one. I read on a blog somewhere that the sigma would start out at $900.00

Even on full-frame, I always found my 50mm to be too close for selfies. Thankful that the 28 can do that!
