The other day, I saw this Yellow Bittern (Ixobrychus sinensis) fishing from a nice perch, bathed in early morning side-lighting that produced a 3D effect on the bird.

However, at 30 meters away, it was too far for a smallish bird (13" total length) to fill a good portion of the frame even for the 350D + Sigmonster.

So I snapped on a Sigma 2x, manually focused on the bird, composed, then raised the mirror. My right hand held the remote switch, while I observed the bird through my 12x50 binoculars in my left hand (raised mirror blocked the VF of course). When the pose appeared promising, I tripped the shutter.

Here's one pic I got - 350D + Sigmonster + Sigma 2x TC, 1600 mm, f/18, 1/100 sec, ISO 400, MF and manual exposure (I have to link the 1000x750 pic):

And a 100% crop (with USM)

Wow, what a capture! I prefer the uncropped version as it show the bird in natural surroundings. The green foliage really add to the birds brown color. As usual, OUTSTANDING!

Great natural surroundings shot Romy. I'm surprised at the quality of the Sigmonster + 2x teleconverter although I've used it on my Bigma.

Thanks, guys.

Keith, the 100% crop is just really to show what this combo can or can't do under those shooting conditions and not presented as an "artistic" shot....:D

Original gets my vote. "STUNNING"
Nice contrast between bird and leaves. Sharpness is great. Piercing eye. Composition works nicely.

Still a great shot Romy. I cannot imagine using the Bigma, the subject is probably as small as a sand in the galaxy.

Kent County, New Brunswick, CANADA
has to be one of the world's best kept secret. It is bordered by the sea to the east and is made up of small villages, farms, forest, brooks and rivers. I have lived here all my life and
would recommend it to anyone.
