The other day, I saw this Yellow Bittern (Ixobrychus sinensis) fishing from a nice perch, bathed in early morning side-lighting that produced a 3D effect on the bird.
However, at 30 meters away, it was too far for a smallish bird (13" total length) to fill a good portion of the frame even for the 350D + Sigmonster.
So I snapped on a Sigma 2x, manually focused on the bird, composed, then raised the mirror. My right hand held the remote switch, while I observed the bird through my 12x50 binoculars in my left hand (raised mirror blocked the VF of course). When the pose appeared promising, I tripped the shutter.
Here's one pic I got - 350D + Sigmonster + Sigma 2x TC, 1600 mm, f/18, 1/100 sec, ISO 400, MF and manual exposure (I have to link the 1000x750 pic):
