I am planning on taking a trip to Disney World in the beginning of May with my wife and 5 yr old son...What is the best solution for taking pictures and travelling light

Was going to take my 20D but decided not to !!!!

Here are my choises:

Take my G6 from work but only has a 4x zoom though, but has RAW mode and accepts my 430EX flash and the BP-511 get great battery life

Go and buy one of the new A700 Powershots (it has a 6x zoom) but no RAW and the flash is slooooow

or Get an S2 IS ???

any experiences or suggestions would be appreciated

Thanks in advance...Shkj

I went there last November and left my Rebel XT at home. I took my G5 mand was glad I did. The last thing I wanted to lug around was extra photo equipment, especially with 2 litle kids. Someone else on this forum took lovely pics with G series camera. I think it was sdommin, do a search for it. Unfortunately, my photos all stink, else I would show you them.

I think the G6 is the best of the 3 options you described. The picture quality and ability for external flash can't be beat.

Hope this helps,
Willie

I just went to Sea World in Florida and took my G5. I have a camera bag with flash, couple lens'...etc......I got some great pics and most of all, I had a good time!!! Didn't have to fumble around with tons of equipment trying to get the "Best" shot.

Life is short.....Enjoy the time with your wife and son.......;)

You will not need the good DSLR. Take the smallest camera you have. Most shots will be outside. The best place to go is Epcot. I love it there. My family loves seeing the shows outside, especially at China. Very colorful.

Search the term Disneyworld under my name, you'll find 2 or 3 threads where I chimed in. Others in those threads provided a lot of sound advice.

I went to Disney last year, taking with me my 20D and A75 Powershot. I carried the 20D while my wife took care of the A75. I am glad I brought the 20D with 17-85IS for all the night shots. There is so much to look at, and taking pictures at day and night reveals so much, even for the same scenes, specially at Epcot. I brought bach 1300 shots for 3GB !!! Kept 800 of them...

Animal Kingdom is also a fabulous place, specially for the children. The safari is really good. Of course, you don't want to get wet with the 20D, but some attractions have dry compartments. I didn't encountered many places where there was danger for my cameras.

Hope this helped and have a nice trip.

Epcot is a must! :D Anyways, I think you should get a good camera but not too bulky or heavy. At first, it's fun having a powerful camera, but when you reach maybe 3pm or so, you wished you just left everything at home. About the fireworks... not sure about it though compared when you capture it with DSLR. Trust me, 3 days is not enough:) Enjoy!

Take a look at Scott's (sdommin) photos here (external link). He takes some of the best photos that I've seen from advanced P&S cameras. I think his disney pictures are from a G1 or G2. I went to disney with my 300D last year. If I was to do it all over again, I would take a smaller camera. Went to my honeymoon with my G6 and came back with plenty of great photos (external link). To me, it's all about enjoying the vacation and not worrying about lugging equipment.

Oh yeah . . . Sophia is right . . . Epcot is a must! Especially at night.

Did somebody say "Disney"??!!

I strongly believe in traveling light on trips to Disney, so I think your decision to take your G6 is a wise one - its plenty of camera and will do just fine. Take lots of storage (extra CF cards or something to download your photos to at the end of each day). Resist the temptation to bring a large tripod for night shots. Instead, get a small tabletop mini-pod (small enough to fit in your pocket). Then, all you need is a fence post or trashcan to set your camera on (there are plenty of each everywhere you look). Bringing a flash is up to you - I would leave it at home, but I can see where it might be useful.

Thanks Willie and Mark for mentioning my Disney photos. Here are all of them:

I am going to Disney World as well in a couple of weeks.
I was skeptical of bringing my 20D and was thinking of picking up the
discontinued Pro1 since I can get one locally at a very good discount price.
Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,

Trevor

It's funny how people complain about the small size of the Canon 350d (nobody here, just in general) and then list all the places where it is inconvenient to carry around a large dSLR.

I got a 350d and am taking it to Disneyland next week.

That was my thought. I'm considering getting a Rebel XT and really it isn't that much bigger than my G6. And when someone recommended taking the G6 with a 420EX which I have also, why not take the Rebel?

But the original question was about a 20D which is quite larger.
