2 photos i took not too long ago, just went walking around takeing pics.
The B&W picture was taken with a tamron lens i borrowed @ 200mm.
The guy in the picture noticed i am aiming at him and waved :)

Anybody thinks a tighter crop on the first one would be better?

I like the first shot. It's sharp and good colors. For me theres to much BG. So heres my $0.02.

Great pics! I'm always scared of what people will think when I take pictures in public....you did really well! Had you seen these people ever before, or were they complete strangers?

Never met those people before.
Don't be scared, if you will try you will see most people don't mind.

If you still don't feel comfortable you can try taking pictures without the people noticing you or just let the people see you are about to take a picture and if they don't like it they will let you know.
