The difference is in the build and electronics. Canon's ones are very solid and from memory will report to the camera whereas the Kenko ones feel rather flimsy (probably wouldn't break though) and they don't report.

The Kenko ones I have report to the camera and also very solid - metal mounts etc.

I stand corrected. It must be a new feature of the DG model.

Really enjoying my 100 mm f/2.8 macro.

I've been thinking about getting this lens, as macro photography seems like something I might enjoy. I'm just wondering how useful this lens would be without a dedicated macro flash, or at least a 580ex that has the macro tilt position.

It is very useful without flash, provided light is good, or any light if you have fairly static objects and a tripod.

Flash helps mostly when light is not so good, or with rapidly moving subjects. Personally, I do most of my macro shots from a tripod, with MLU, and a wired remote control. I do use reflectors occasionally, to lighten up dark spots or remove harsh shadows. I do make those reflectors myself; plain white cardboard, or cardboard covered with crinkled aluminium foil.

Kind regards, Wim

Wow, that is a crazy gear list you have there...

Anyway, I would anticipate doing most of my macro work the same way, from a tripod, MLU, POTN wired shutter release...

I've only got the 420ex flash right now, which doesn't have that last notch-down position for macro, and I'd rather spend my deflating US$$$ on glass right now rather than a 580ex II.

I've had a 100/2.8 macro for over a year, but until this weekend never really used it except for an indoor concert. After deciding that I was more comfortable with handholding than using a tripod, I upped the ISO and started firing: manual focus/exposure, burst mode (sometimes windy), f/5.6-11. Shot only flowers and ferns (no insects).

Great lens! Very sharp when I had the focus dead on and shooting in burst caught the subject not moving. In a 3-6 frame burst, could easily see which shot was the most in focus.

I'll post some photos when I learn how to do it.

Too much stuff, not enough shooting time.

A little noisy. I took this the other day while up at Mt. Baldy.
