I own both and I like them a lot. Either one can take great portraits, but the 85 can't focus very close (2.8 feet vs 1 foot) so it really isn't good for macro. You can't go wrong with either one, it just depends on whether you see greater need for macro or for bigger aperture.

If you want Macro, get the Macro! If you want something that you can use to capture action and such, get the 85! For more "walk-around" stuff, I'd recommend a more "Walk-around" lens, one with some flexibility!!
