Either one can take great portraits, but the 85 can't focus very close (2.8 feet vs 1 foot) so it really isn't good for macro. You can't go wrong with either one, it just depends on whether you see greater need for macro or for bigger aperture.

For more "walk-around" stuff, I'd recommend a more "Walk-around" lens, one with some flexibility!! Tony
