Whomever has a 17-85mm lens, can you tell me if there is a click sound when you zoom from 17 to 24mm. I just bought this lens and I wanted to know if this is normal or is there a problem with mine.

I've never heard a clicking noise while zooming. Keep using it for a while and see if it "breaks-in" and goes away. Otherwise I'd have it checked out if it's brand new.

I had this lens for my 20d, silent when zooming. The clicking indicates some internal problem, I would exchange it as its brand new.

I had a rubbing sound in mine when i zoomed in and out . Canon fixed it under warranty :) . What i didnt say to them is that i dropped it:oops: . There was no marks on it to show, but prior to that and now the lens is very quiet when zooming in and out. I would take it back and get a new one , there should'nt be any noises apart from the stabilizer cutting in like kaitanium said above

The reson I chose the Canon was for the silent Focus and for the smooth click free zoom.

i've had a 28-105 that exhibited a very faint click sound when zooming past a certain focal length. i don't really think it's a problem. i'm assuming your click sound is faint?

My 15-30mm does that. Very faint. Works beautifully in all respects. Probably a bit of snot inside or something ;) I'm not bothered, but if you are about yours OP then take it back.

it's a new canon feature. when the lens thinks you've framed the proper photo, it clicks for you so you don't have to.

  So all the guys with silent lenses need to sort their compositional skills!! Nice feature. Does that go with the front and back focus 'romantica-vision' feature, or is it an optional extra?
