While doing some research into the long-end of things, I came across a mention (or leak, rather) from back in December of 2001... About two lenses Canon was developing. The 200-400mm f/4.0 DO IS USM & 500mm f/2.8 DO IS USM.

So here we are, some five plus years later... Whazzup? Any more rumblings?

The original info can be seen here: http://www.pitkajarvi.net/dolenses.htm (external link)

If Canon came out with that 200-400mm, I'd be on it like stink on poo. Right now I'm looking at either the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS or 300mm f/4L.

It's just a rumor,. that proved to be wrong.. lots of those happen.

FYI A 500mm f/2.8 would be nearly as large as the 1200mm f/5.6 which costs about $100,000.00 ... (give or take 10K yes those zeros mean one hundred thousand dollars.)

SO I don't imagine a very long line at the register for that item.

The 200-400mm f/4 is an awesome idea that Nikon has succesfully feilded (with "VR" ) and it's a peach. Please don't confuse this with a portable hand held lens like the 100-400mm,. it's about the same size as a 500mm 4.5 prime.

I beg your pardon,. did not check link,. did not realize "DO" was involved,.

This makes weights more plauseable.. but I've still never heard these rumors.
Canon needs to do a LOT of work with DO before it's ready for prime time.

Oh, I know about the 1200mm, heh. SI has a couple of the very, very few in circulation. Quite impressive, that one.

DO would cut down on the size and weight a lot... But like you, I'm not totally convinced on the DO technology. That "leak" was from when the 400mm DO came out... Canon may have been more gung-ho about DO back then - because no others have come out since.

I'm mostly leaning towards the ol' standby 100-400mm... But it's not terribly bright and lacks weathersealing. This wouldn't stop me, but one can dream, right? It's either that or the 300mm f/4.0L. :)
