You can pick them up somewhat regularly on eBay from a particular vendor in South Korea that moves these. Make sure there's plenty of room on the ol' credit card first.

Speaking of the 200/1.8, there are fresh rumors of Canon releasing a new IS version of this lens later in the year. Discussion is on Fred Miranda's forum:

How much does a unit like this typically run?

Depends on the condition and serial number... But upwards of $4-5k, IIRC.

Here's one such auction: http://cgi.ebay.com …Z4687QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (external link)

I got to use one a while back. They are heavy enough to require an assistant for an all day shoot, that's for sure. But the image quality was exceptional.

I'd rather spend that much on a 300 2.8 IS and a 135 F/2 with a 1.4x. you're a little slower, but you'd cover a wider range

I have a dilema in that I need a 200/f1.8 in August 2006, but I don't expect any possibility of a new lens to be announced until September. I don't want to BUY a lens that is no longer being supported. So would appreciate any and all sources of "mostly reliable" rumors, speculation or even better facts about the possibility of a new 200/1.8 coming out in the fall. So far the only semi-reliable rumor is of a 200/2, but that same source thought the new 85/1.2 II would be a 85/1.4, although they did get the date and focal length correct.

All other rumors are either highly speculative fiction or indicate no new lens in that range of focal length and aperture any time soon.

So please post any links you are aware of....

If I can confirm to my satisfaction one way or the other I will either buy a used 200/1.8 (if it doesn't look likely to be replaced) or rent one for the date in August/September and just wait it out for the new lens before buying.

Thanks,

don't hold your breath. nothing will be known until slightly before septembers photo show, and thats only if Canon decides to announce a new lens.

i'd rent it anyway if thats all you will use it for. our local shop charges $30/day or for the weekend. at 4500 for the lens, thats 150 times you'd have to need it before it would be worth it.

That's better then where I had planned on renting it from at $45 per day, although I will probably stick to my first choice as I can pick it up from them the day I need it and return it the day after I am done (no shipping time).
Also that should be 150 days, not times. I need one time, but over a 3-4 day period.

I prefer owning my equipment when possible unless it is literally a once or twice ever occasion event or the transportation cost versus renting makes worth renting. But no point in owning something that is no longer supported with spare parts, because I will break it.

That one got sold for $3,500 early.

Nice late model, too.
