Hi

Can someone please give me a hint about creating and using frames (ie wood effect) in PS7?

I found a default version for this:

Hi Damian
I have a filters unlimited plug-in that has a wood filter.
I can easily create a canvas the size I would want the frame for my intended photo to be with two different grain combo's and any colour combination.
I would use the rectangular marquee tool to cut out the middle of the photo (the size of the photo to frame) and paste the intended photo in place. There will be two layers. The layer with the frame can be beveled. The only thing with this is it wouldn't have the effect of mitered corners. That is a whole new ball of wax.
Here is a link to a tutorial that explains how to make some frames. The only thing is that I found there was some trouble performing some tasks in ps 7. I think it is geared around earlier versions.

Thanks Colin. I was hoping that there was an easy "you pres this button answer" but I guess that is me being lazy.

Here is a tutorial I wrote up quickly for you

NOTE: I DID THIS IN PS6 BUT IT SHOULD BE SIMILAR IN PS7

1. Open the Photo

2. Convert to RGB (Image>Adjust>RGB)

3. Expand the canvas (Image>Canvas Size)
(I expanded to 4.25†play around until you find something you like)

4. Use the magic wand to select the expanded area

5. Create a new Layer

6. Expand the selection by one pixel (Select>Modify>Expand> 1px)

7. Choose a nice background wood color (RGB 194,140,87 is what I used)

8. Edit > fill > Foreground Color

9. Select > deselect

10. Now will be the texture (Filter>Noise>Add Noise)
Do it Monochromatic (I did it Gaussian 5% you can do more for deeper grain)

11. Now, select each segment of the wood with the rectangular marquee for a but joint and the polygon lasso for a miter joint…

12. Do a motion blur for the grain (Filter>Blue Motion blur)
At the top and bottom do 0 degrees
On the left and right do 90 degrees

13.To give some depth do Layer>Layer Style>Bevel and Emboss
Here are the settings I used
Style: Inner Bevel
Technique: Chisel Hard
Depth: 100%
Size 3px
Soften: 1px
---------------
Here is some extra I did:

1. Select > All

2. Edit > Copy merged

3. File > New (Make the new canvas bigger, I expanded by 1â€)

4. Past the image (Edit > Paste)

5. Layer>Layer Style > Drop Shadow (I just used the default settings)

Yah... well... um notice I wrote out a tutorial... I normally dont read tutorials... I make them up... tutorials aren't up my ally... they are a good way, though, for a complete novice to learn Photoshop (apposed to stanard PS books) in fact when I was a novice that is how I learned PS, with tutorials... but... after enough you figure out how to replicate stuff how you like...

Then I also believe non-native photoshop filters are cheating.
