Help...G1 error Message: "LENS"

All of a sudden out of the blue, my G1 has a "LENS" error message showing up.

When I turn it on, it sounds like it is powering up OK.

Then, it simply hums or spins for about 10 seconds.

Then, there are 5 short 'beeps.'

Then a flashing "LENS" message appears.

The lens never extends (sounds like it is slipping?).

This also happens when I turn on the viewer mode.

Any suggestions on what the problem may be? The unit powers OK. Just no lens extension or viewing window activation.

Any help or information you could offer would be greatly appreciated. (I don't feel like paying $155 plus shipping to send it into Canon for what seems to me to be a minor problem?)
