All 100% crops, no processing, from the 500mm f/4. This lens is simply stunning.

House Finch

Brown-Headed Cowbird, the first I've ever seen on my feeders. He went straight for the food, bypassing my branches and a chance for a natural shot, and he didn't stay long at all.

Chipping Sparrow

I feel like a fool for not knowing what this bird is. Maybe I'm tired, maybe I'm just a bit daft.

You can take my 100-400 L away when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

Wow, I'd love to own this lens..one day! amazing crops Scottes! I saw some guy today lugging his around and he had a big grin...he just finished taking a series of those harriers I saw, they were amazing pics!

I'm still learning in terms of Id'ing birds but that last one looks like a common House Sparrow, but i could be wrong :)

Looks like you're really enjoying that 500 f/4 of yours, Scott. Nice portraits you have there.

I think Tyger got it right. That last bird looks like the house sparrow. They're not listed with the native sparrows in the Sibley's book because house sparrows are not really indidenous to North America. They're actually European sparrows.

Nice crisp shots here and especially impressive considering 100 percent crops. The Brown Headed- Cowbird appears to be a female. Very nice series!

Great shots, Scottes. That lens is terrific to give such crisp images. Super color and detail...

Scott, there has been a recall on all 500 f/4 lenses. They have to be returned to Canon Service here in Montreal due to sharpness issues. You and Sheldon can send yours to me and I'll make sure they get fixed, sometime in the next 5 years......:):):):):):):):):):)
Really excellent crops. Damn......

I hope you don't mind me adding one to the thread. Here's a 100% crop of a blue jay shot with the 500mm f4 w/1.4x extender. This is the sharpest lens I've ever owned. / ~Sam

The bird you had no name for is a House or English Sparrow. They are members of the Weaver Finch family, imported into this country. This bird and the Starling (also imported) are 2 birds that will never get on the endangered species list.

Great photos!

Thanks folks! And thanks for the ID of the Sparrow. As soon as Tyger mentioned it I hit myself on the forehead. Doh!

Webejamn, I was about 16 feet away, give or take a foot.

Ian, I'll drop it off to you at GMOS III... Damn, I'd love to get this fixed. :-)

Dimitri, the lens says he wants to stay in Boston. Sorry. Will you move here?

Kross, this was on my dream list for over a year before I could get it. It's worth the wait!
