Went for a trip into Milford Sound, New Zealand this weekend. Just by the Homer Tunnel are these little buggers. They'll nick/ try to nick anything they can. One managed to steal a receipt the other tried to retune my car aerial. These are my first attemptts at capturing these birds. Shame I didn't get underneath the wings as they are bright red.

They really are an amazing bird. The will eat anything (including the ruber from around windscreens)

Nice shots what were they taken with.

Those birds look like fun, but not on my car.

Nice shots. Those birds look (andsound!) like they have a lot of character. You can see the mischievousness in these shots.

They were taken with a 10D and a Sigma 50-500. I was quite suprised they were so sharp as the camera + lens is quite a weight and they are hand held.
The Kias are so cheeky. They had a nibble at the window rubber, then the windscreen wipers and once they couldn't get anything off they flew to a campervan and started on that. It really is a shame I didn't get them with wings open as the red is a striking contrast.
These two live by the Homer Tunnel as they get so many scraps from the tourists.

Great Shots! The feather detail on the first is very nice, I'm very impressed that you hand held it for that. (too bad he can't pay the bill from the reciept he took ;)).

(Apologies to liven an old tread!)

That they are! Found in NZ only, I made it my mission to hunt some down last time I was down south, I failed

Funny thing is you found some the same place I did the time before last, just outside the tunnel, probably the same ones!

Great shots of this remarkable bird. Must be a bit of a pest.

You wouldn't have any kiwi captures, would you?

It used to be considered a pest, I remember going to the ski fields as a kid and the ski field people trying to trap them in cages using an old boot as bait. They didn't want them damaging peoples cars.

They are protected now as there is no where near as many around.
