Or, as it's known today: Alcatraz (I saw no reason why you wouldn't be able to go there, Kev)

Ruins on the north end of the island:

Great series, Lonnie. You have captured the sense of depression and hopelessness I had when I stood in that place. If you are now into old prisons, I'd recommend the old AZ Territorial Prison in Yuma, and the old WY prison in Rawlings, WY.

Thanks for the comments, guys. I was kind of surprised at how small the place is. I was expecting it to be quite a big bigger.

I'll add those other two prisons to my growing list of places to visit, Stan!

Lonnie, I completely missed the post. Great shots of Alcatraz. The buildings have sure taken a beating over the years. Your Typical Cell shot gives me the creeps. Thanks for posting these.

Again, thanks for the comments, Bryan and Kev. Yeah, time and that corrosive sea air sure haven't been very kind to the buildings there.

I should mention that I have many more shots of The Rock on my web site in this gallery (external link). (They start here, on page 9 (external link).) I included a little history about the island and prison in the descriptions that go with some of the pictures.

I should also mention that the canister on the wall below the ceiling in the Dining Hall shot (it looks like a Thermos with a black top) was a tear gas canister. Those were on the walls throughout the dining hall and could be triggered to release the gas in case of a riot by the inmates during a meal. As one of the park rangers said, it's a good thing they never had to use it because they hadn't devised a plan for the guards and kitchen employees to get out in such an occasion. I don't think I even mentioned that in the caption for that shot on my site...

I looked at these last week, lonnie and thought I left a post......but my computer at home is acting up and it must have missed the boat..............

Looks like you had a good visit to Alcatraz. I have sailed by it but never took the tour. Now I wish I had. The photos are great......(glad you didn't poured on).
The photos of the cells and cell blocks give me the heebie jeebies but I love that the whole place sits out in the middle of the Bay.

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

Great pictures !!

I went there in 2004, and could not help feeling as the boat pulled up at the quay that this must be one terrible moment for an arriving prisoner.

Thanks again, everyone!

It would have been nice if you'd done the tour with me. You should go sometime, though. It's definitely worth seeing in person.

I'll bet that was a pretty forboding experience for the newly arriving prisoners. That's a nice shot you got, too. I took a similar one, but there was no hint of blue in the sky for me. There was a little light rain occasionally while I was there, but it never really got too bad until later in the evening after I had already left the island.

I'll go check out the rest of the pictures in your gallery.

Nice series. It gives me an idea of what to expect when I'm there in June. I'll have to make sure that there's time for a tour.
