I got these shots the other day. Although these are a really annoying bird (beacuse of their very very loud call) they are also a great looking bird IMHO.

This one in particular decided to check me out while I was sitting takeing photos of ducks (suprise suprise). He came right up to me and had a good look. Unfortunatly due to the focus lengh of my 50-500 this was the best head shots I could get.

Please let me know what you think and anyways I could imporve. Be it in composition setup or suggestions for PP.

All shots taken with 350D and bigma (50-500) on tripod. A little sharpen done.

Thanks
Marty

All very nice with great light and bokeh in shot #3. The blue eye in the first and second is quite striking in color and glassiness ( is that a word?):D Nice work!

I love #3 - the background is great and the exposure is perfect. These look a little blue/purple to me - I've taken close-ups and I realize they're not a true black. Very good shots in any case, and #3 is certainly a keeper.

Nicely done, good detail in the tricky black feathers. Great metallic colors, like the Magpie if you catch the light in just the right angle.

Thanks for the comments and I think glassiness is close enough to a word.

Thanks for the comments. I know what you mean by the purple look. I tried to make them just black but lost all detail. I think with the light catching the gloss black feather maybe a bit of blue is reflected.

Thanks, it is not very often the come this close to you so i got lucky.

Thanks. I think the light really makes a big difference to these guys. If it is overcast the can end up looking a bit blacker and not with the same sheen to them.

They look nice but noisy as anything

Thanks. I know what you mean by wanting to shoot them at times. Luckly I dont have a lot around where I live.

I heard about a study where they showed that crows are the only animal with a sense of humor. They are also supposed to be very smart. GReat pictures!

Thanks for the comment. They are a very intelligent bird. One of the few that you dont see as road kill. Also the only bird that can eat cane toads. They know to flip them over and eat underneath away from the poison glands.

I also know that people say they are hard to shoot (with a gun) as they are fast and smart enough to move as the bullet leaves the gun. (of course a high powered rifle would win)

Also i do not condone the shooting of these birds.
