I too am interested if anyone knows.

I tried to roughly imagine the dimension of the 1500 series and all of them seemed to be large enough for a body or two, 2-3 lenses and maybe a flash.

It'd be nice to hear from someone who knows though.

Here's what the 1510 will hold, might be too big for your gear but you'll have room if you buy more stuff in the future.

I just bought a 1650. It holds my 2 flashes, 1Ds with 50mm on it, 17-40, 70-200 F4, 300 F4, 15mm fishy, pocketwizards, flash bracket, spare bits, chargers etc. The foam half underneath the pick n' pluck is undisturbed. I would like to find a way to keep the cushion yet stow my tripod and monopod whilst retaining cushion. Buy bigger than you need.

I bought oversize since I knew I would add gear one day, and I did.

The rollers come in handy. A 1550 might be a good idea. Also consider Storm Cases (Hardigg). They are quite nice as well.

Are you guys then happy to let your equipment go in the hold on flights?

hmmm... okay... for my current setup im sure the 1554 would be good enough (thats what im looking it) but what if i added a 400 5.6 to the arsenal.. would i need to bump up to the 1600 series? ohh, and if i could it would be nice to fit my tripod in it (3001pro)

The case is tough as nails.

It's protected. But I assume you mean from "loss". You can prevent loss by avoiding late check-ins and too little time between connections. Avoid both.
1 in 250 pieces of checked baggage are lost. Mark you luggage properly. I keep a large font intinerary of the destinations listed on the tickets taped to the outside of the case. Make sure you use REALLY good tags that won't get torn off. Luggage just doesn't go missing, it's usually someone trying to figure out WTH is going on with it and the real flight leaves.
An ounce of prevention....

From the Pelican site:

This 1510 Pelican case, is the toughest and biggest FAA approved airline-legal carry-on case available. Complete with side handle, front handle and convenient extension handle, it is the perfect rolling travel companion.

I would never let my gear out of my sight.
