It was our anniversary this weekend and the wife asked me to take her to Butterfly World in South Florids. Most of our lenses are not appropriate for this type of photography but it was surpisingly enjoyable. Hope I don't lose my mancard for this but here are some of my pictures from the excursion.

Nice shots!
No mancard lost on these. I wish we had a place like this near our house. I would be the one asking to take the wife.

what kind of settings do you use to get those pics? also which lens and how far from the object do you take the photo? I have a 70-300 Sigma but in my 20D I don't know how to set it up to take that quality on the birds I shoot.

Thanks

Wow, you certainly got your money's worth at that place. Well done on all.

The camera for all of these was Canon 20D. Most of these except for the first one were shot with a Canon 100-400 L IS lens. Shutter speeds were actually pretty slow, anywhere between 1/80 and 1/200 for the most part. Apperture is as wide as the lens would allow which on this lens is anywhere from 4.5 to 5.6. The image stabilization on the lens and the fact that most of these birds are very close allows for the slow shutter speeds otherwise these would all be very blurry. I had a camera mounted flash and since the birds were fairly close I turned the flash power way down. The problem with the big lenses for Butterfly World is that they need anywhere from 4-6 feet to focus and this place is fairly tight so you don't always have enough room to back up. If I go back I will need to pickup some extension tubes for these lenses to be able to focus at closer distances.

Thanks,
Ovi

A bunch of good shots. I am sort of a regular at BFW.

You should try your 300mm f/4.0L with an extension tube or two. Can focus up much, much closer but loose the ability to focus to infinity. That lens works really good for "semi-macro".

Thanks Ion10c. Which do you recommend? The Kenko set is what I have been looking at.

Beautiful work. I love the colors on the 2nd one. The National Aviary in Pittsburgh is about 20 min from me. It's a nice place for shots like this.

I have been debating wether to make the drive down there and your shots have convinced me to do so in the near future. #3 is really nice.
