Shot some inline hockey yesterday, featuring Photography-On-The.net's own forsaken aka Simon. :)

The lighting was atrocious, but managed to get some ok shots using full manual, Sigma 120-300 lens at f2.8!, ISO 800/1600 with 20D, and around 1/320 - 1/400th..
White balance was kept to auto, as it was worse, due to the bad lights, and also some daylight coming through, giving odd colour temps all throughout. So left it to auto, and didn't do a too bad job, with some tweaks in RawShooter.

I miss roller hockey... good fun! I have to admit, I didn't realize roller hockey was even remotely popular in NZ..... hmmm... good people....beautiful country..AND HOCKEY?? I might have to change my locale!

nice work warren. THe white balance is quite accurate considering what light there was. Wow it looks like our goalie was actually focused.

These are GREAT shots!

Is this as hard to shoot as ice hockey?

Thanks for the nice comments guys. I felt it was a bit harder than ice hockey due to less lighting. It all comes down to the venue, and Simons home venue is apparently a bit lighter, with more fluro lights.

I had shot some two nights before, but it was dark outside, leaving only the lights above. I was shooting ISO 1600, F2.8, and only 1/200th, and getting a whole load of blur. At least being in the morning, some light was coming through the plastic windows (not really windows, but did let some light in), as you can see in the 2nd pic. This made the light around 2 times brighter, and helped greatly.

Thanks again

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. And Mike, that comment is wonderful. I'm looking forward to seeing your shots from your 3 week vacation to Hawaii.

Mills: I was next to the players bench, squeezed in a corner, the only place without nets. Two nights before, I shot through the nets, but they weren't too noticeable. Kirst was holding the lens for a moment and the puck went airborne, hit the net and hit the 120-300. At least it was cushioned.
