I took these in my back yard....they are Blue Banded Bee's and are about half the size of a normal bee....

Pretty don't you think?

Both are quite beautiful. The detail in the first is excellent but for the overall image I prefer the second shot...great composition, action , color , light...all comes together. Both shots are great. What is the exif data on these?.......nice work!!

I'm only new at this so please excuse my ignorance....

I took the shots with a Canon 20D, 100 mm Canon macro lens..I manually focused as they are fast movers and I didn't trust the camera's auto focusing for it. Apeture 5.6 Shutter Speed 1/200 No flash for the flying shot...but a Canon 550ex was used (2 stops down) for the first shot as I was losing light fast. All shots were hand held.

Thank you for the critque, its much appreciated!

I hope this helps??

I have attached another I took on the same day...

Wow! Great shoooting. The 2nd (in flight) shot is simply stunning. I'd have said the same for the others, as well, if I weren't so blown away by #2.

Wow thanks guys...I hadn't seen one either Dragonfli and when I spotted them in the yard I took the shots originally to try and identify them...I have found where they live now and plan to have another go at photographing them one day...
Thaks Mike, I got lucky this day....all the shots were hand held and they were all clear enough when I loaded them into the computer....I'm not always this lucky.
Kiwibloke...plenty of critters in Sydney too...no excuses anymore...I'll probably b sorry i said that I've looked at your site and you have some amazing shots on there...
Sprinkles and Tupe....I'm blown away by everyones comments...thanks!

They really are stunning insects, I was quite taken by the vivid blue on their backs.

They are an Australian Native bee...stingless I believe despite that wicked looking thing on their face...

I had a search and the concencus is that they are foundeverywhere in Australia with the exception of Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

They are quite beautiful - I'm glad to know they are stingless, I'm highly allergic to bee stings!! And with all the other poisonous and dangerous critters you've got downunder I'm really surprised to learn that! ;)
