Seems to me that boosting contrast (and perhaps saturation) in post-processing might really help these.

As you've indicated editing's OK, here's a quick example of some rather quick and gross adjustments (levels, curves, saturation then levels again). More care with the full-size image would do better:

It's a shame there's so much of the trees obstructing the rainbow but I'm assuming shooting position was somewhat limited. I agree with mfunnell that it definitely needs a little boost to overcome the washed out look. I had a quick crack at the second one - mainly just increasing the saturation on the rainbow and adjusting levels. As mfunnell said more could be achieved when working on the original image.

Can someone please give me a quick lesson on curves- I tried playing with the original picture last night but I couldn't get it anywhere near as nice as I see here. Thanks

Hmmm... I'd like to help with a quick explanation, but sometimes those are not so quick to construct. I like to think that I've used "curves" in Photoshop often enough to know what I'm doing: but I guess I don't really know, as I don't feel confident explaining what I'm doing. I'll think on that, and may come back with an attempt.

In the interim, here's someone else's take:

Unfortunately, that tutorial in no way reflects how I actually go about using the curves control. It's just what I could find with a brief search on a site I normally like. Nonetheless, I hope it helps at least somewhat.
