I am fairly new to this site and haven't entered a competition but am wondering if they are judged according to how well you are known and how much you post or if decisions are based on merit alone. Any thoughts or experience to share?

Most photography competitions online or not are judged on if the judge likes what the subject is first, then technical considerations.

I for one grow tired of owl and flower pictures from octogenarians at competitions. I usually have the lone sports or action shot in the group. The digital age here (in Vancouver) has opened up photography competition to the likes of blasphemers like me and I'm having fun with it. One day I'll spook my club with a red flower picture.

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional
Full frame and some primes.

I think they are generally judged fairly. There are just too many members of this forum for anyone to stand out to the extent that their 'popularity' could influence voting.

Generally you can trade L glass for support, and the contests are judged primarily on the content of your kit. The Forum tries to maintain a certain standard, inorder to justify the use of expensive equipment. It has to be this way or we would never be able to convince our significant others to let us buy new equipment...

Seriously, IMHO the contests are great fun and fairly judged offering thoughtful insight to the photos submitted by members of any stature. Give it a go.

Of course, the POTN World Photo Weekend 'competition' isn't judged at all ;-)a We invent a theme and people shoot and upload whatever they want. It's about getting out regularly and having an inspiration subject to shoot and then just sharing the results. It's good fun.

The contests Big_B run can't be more fair than they are since they are anonymous. Only Big_B know which photo belong to which member. So unless a member "cheats" by revealing which photo is his/hers there is no sure way of voting for Your forum buddies.

Sometimes I have been able to identify the member because of his/her photo style.

The competitions are anonymous. The picture is sent to the moderator or member who oversees the competition and then the pic is uploaded to a gallery. All images are kept anonymous with only the title displayed along with the voting number. I have participated in a couple, knowing that my pics were not the best by far but the experience was fun none-the-less. If you are entering the contests with only the thought of winning I urge you to not compete as it will take the fun out of it. That being said I still believe they are chosen based on peoples likes of the photos and technical merit.

We will start to doubt that statement as soon as one of your images ever wins one of the contests

Sorry, had to go for that punch below the belt.
You'd have to actually post some pictures first :p.

Best regards,
Andy

Andy:

I'll have you know that I have posted many photos, all of them extraordinarily mediocre. That takes talent not to ever have a good one.

Try it.
